Welcome Note

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (DGES) is one of five departments under the Solomon Mahlangu College of Science and Education (SMCoSE) and is based at Solomon Mahlangu Campus-Mazimbu, Morogoro. It has a good number of qualified staff in Environment–related issues such as Environmental Pollution, Climate Change and Natural Resources Management.

The Department plays a major role in providing core environmental courses in Meteorology, Air pollution, land and water pollution and Climate Change for B.Sc. in Environmental Sciences and Management programme. It also offers Geography courses for the B.Sc. with Education programme. The department also postgraduate degree programmes in the levels of PhD and MSc. Currently the department offers Master of Science in Environmental Sciences, Management and Technology (MSc. ESMT) and Master of Science in Hydrogeology and Water Resource Management (MSc. HWRM).

The department aims at making an important contribution to the scientific understanding of societal issues such as environmental pollution, climate change, nature and landscape management, soil and water management, exploitation of underground resources, rural and urban development and international development collaboration.

Our courses offered challenge students' ability to integrate theory and practice for the analysis, understanding, and management of environmental and environment-related problems. In addition to their academic work, all students are encouraged to develop professionally relevant social and communication skills, and orient themselves in the global networks of environmental institutions and movements. The Department is a centre of excellence for environment-related researches as well. The department has educated several hundred young people from inside and outside Tanzania who are now working in academia, international organizations, governments, NGOs and businesses companies.
